It’s a super book that we love to dip into every so often, especially the recipe section. We were kindly given permission to share the cider sorbet recipe with you here which makes for a delicious, tangy dessert.

Ingredients

250g caster sugar
125ml water
1 teaspoon glucose syrup
150g pressed apple juice (the apple juice needs to be weighed)
500ml Dan Kelly’s Cider (or any quality Irish cider)
Juice of 1 lemon

Method

Bring the sugar, water and glucose syrup to the boil, then turn down the heat and simmer for 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and add the remaining ingredients. Leave to cool, then churn in an ice-cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Don’t despair if you don’t have an ice-cream maker. Once the mixture is fully frozen, whizz it in a food processor, then put it back in the freezer in an airtight container. It won’t be as smooth as sorbet made in a machine but it will do the trick.

About Slàinte

Slàinte is the ideal gift for the beer or cider lover in your life. It tells the story of brewing in Ireland, the various styles, food pairings for beer and a great directory of the micro-breweries and cider makers in this country. You can order a copy of it here.

Summer is in full swing and we all know there’s no better place than Ireland in the sun! Here are five of the best beer gardens around Ireland to enjoy the craic, sun and views along with a few craft ciders. In no particular order:

2. Olso Bar, Salthill, Galway, Co. Galway

A trip to Galway wouldn’t be complete without a walk down the promenade at Salthill followed by a pint at Olso Bar. Soak up the sun and the great Galway atmosphere all in one go!

While some foodies might turn up their noses at the prospect of pairing cider with food, with the onset of more varieties to the market and the greater appreciation of the craft of cider, this attitude is changing. Cider is, of course, a fruit-based drink and very much like wine, it can be sweet or dry, quite still or very sparkling. Cider’s depth of flavour can complement certain types of food and dishes. Let’s take a look at some of these dishes.

Pasta and Risotto

Pasta dishes with rich, creamy sauces work well with cider as the cider can cut through these, especially any that have chicken or fish through them. Risotto and cider also work well together too, so it makes a perfect accompaniment.

Cheese

When you consider just how many cheeses work well with apples, it isn’t hard to see why cheeses like Camembert and Gruyere work particularly well with cider. This is why this makes the perfect snack if you want to showcase a variety of ciders to any of your guests.

Roast Pork

The pairing of pork and apple is one that has been around for centuries, and you can understand then why pairing roast pork with your favourite cider is going to be a perfect match. Whether it is a roast pork Sunday dinner or the ever-popular pulled pork, this works exquisitely with cider.

Curries

Depending on how hot you like your curries, a nice cold cider can be a perfect match to these. However, we prefer a milder curry, such as a Korma or Passanda and a medium dry cider goes well with these.

Mussels

These two go hand in hand, whether you decide to use the cider for cooking the mussels, or indeed as an accompaniment.

Salads

Particularly on a summer’s day and especially when the salad contains chicken, ham or cheese.

If you want to find out more about our three varieties of cider – our original blend, whiskey cask and single variety – just click on here.

Paddy Cullen’s Pub in Dublin’s leafy Ballsbridge is an ideal location for the discerning customer to enjoy a drink or fine food in good company and pleasant traditional surroundings.

Hugely popular around match-time, be it Soccer or Rugby (thanks to its close proximity to the Aviva Stadium), there is always a good atmosphere around the pub. They have a great food menu, with everything from Tapas to a large selection of lunch and dinner options.

This is a great spot to have a pint of Dan Kelly’s Cider and definitely worth a visit.

Hailed as one of Ireland’s great foodie spots, Kinsale is blessed with a plethora of great food and drink locations. When you have had your fill of the great food on offer, a pint of Dan Kelly’s can be had at The Greyhound Bar, which is located in Market Square in Kinsale and this is a pub which has been around since 1690 and is as proper an ‘old Irish’ pub as you can find.

It is utterly charming and extremely cosy. Kinsale itself is a great place to visit, heavily populated with great pubs, but for a cozy fireside experience, this is a great pub.

We are extremely excited to announce that this coming Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th May, for the third year running, we will be hosting the Apple Blossom Festival here at Boyne Grove Fruit Farms in Drogheda. Over the course of the two days we’ll be giving visitors tours of the orchards, telling visitors about the different types of apples we grow, explaining how important the history of the orchards is, telling people how important bees are to the orchards and more.

Admission to the event is €5 for adults and children are free. All proceeds will be going towards the Drogheda Homeless Aid and the local SOSAD branch.

All of the walks through the orchards, which are stunning at that time of year, will end in the local farm shop where visitors will be able to sample and purchase (at very competitive prices!) the local cider and apple juice.

One of our favourite weekends is about to begin as the third annual Big Grill Fest, which we’re extremely happy to be appearing at, is taking place in Herbert Park, Dublin from this Thursday, 14th August until Sunday, 14th August. This isn’t a few-sausages-and-burgers-from-your-local-butcher kind of BBQ. We’re talking demos on how to make the perfect jerk chicken, pit masters explaining BBQ cuts and sausage making masterclasses.

In addition, there’ll be all sorts of gourmet BBQ food to enjoy, toe tapping tunes and eating competitions – the chilli pepper challenge will be interesting. We’ll be handing out our festival shades, which were all the rage at Castlepalooza, when you buy a cider. Also, if you share the name of our great-grand father, Dan Kelly, then we’ll sort you out with some free cider!*

The art of barbecuing meets the art of Irish craft cider and beer this weekend. Don’t miss it!

You can see the weekend line up and buy tickets onthe Big Grill website.

*With a valid ID of course.

This week’s Stockist of the Week is Buckle Up in South Dublin’s Sandymount Village. Claiming to serve Melbourne-style dining in Dublin 4, this new eatery serves modern, worldly cuisine and speciality coffee to people from the locale and beyond. They’ve also got a secret sun trap out the back which, if September is nice like it sometimes can be, will be particularly enjoyable to sit in next month.

Like most restaurants, there are three main sittings here with breakfast, lunch and dinner. On their breakfast menu you’ll discover dishes such as Avocado Hummus Toast and the BFG (Bacon, Fried (egg) and Guacamole on a bap), while at lunch you can try everything from Beetroot Burger to a Melbourne Chicken Cesar (sumac chicken, parmesan, baby greens and yuzu).

Like so many Dublin eateries, brunch is a big thing here too, with their menu gracing the tables every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday from 9am-4pm. Visit then and you’ll be able to try their own take on French Toast and Sheikshuka – a mixture of a spiced tomato sauce, fried eggs, olives and falafel.

Check out Buckle Up’s full menu on their website, while you can also keep up to date by following them onFacebook, Twitter & Instagram.

Over the last few months we’ve had the pleasure of talking about our cider, the story behind the name and apple growing on various radio shows. Some of you may have listened in but if you didn’t, here are two of our favourite on-air appearances.

Countrywide

So why does craft beer get a better deal from the Government than craft cider? We spoled on behalf of Cider Ireland – the overall body for Craft cider in Ireland.

http://www.rte.ie/radio/utils/radioplayer/rteradioweb.html#!rii=9%3A20865224%3A1523%3A17%2D10%2D2015%3A

The Sod Show

A few weeks ago we spoke to Peter Donegan of the Sod Show about cider making. We also chatted about the art, skill and challenges involved in apple growing and how the harvest impacts the cider. Not just for the horticulturalists among you!

http://www.sodshow.com/2015/08/07/the-sodshow-meets-olan-mcneese-of-dan-kellys-cider/

Beer Sessions

Earlier this year we headed West to New York and enjoyed a really fun, cider fuelled conversation with well-know New York Publician Jimmy Carbone. Craigies Cider joined us and it made for a great evening of chat about what makes Irish craft cider so unique. It made for great radio too!
